WHO IS BEHIND BASTION? Bastion Recordings is run by Zachary V. Sunderman of Warren, Ohio, who started the label in late 2007 and began working on it in earnest in late 2009. Zack handles most label affairs himself, with some volunteer help. At present, Bastion has no employees. Zack does not currently draw a salary from the label; he also is full-time student, does paralegal work, plays in a few musical projects, and works on various other ideas and concerns. Throughout 2010, Bastion Recordings was a partnership with Zach Germaniuk, guitarist of the band Red Sun. Zach's enthusiasm helped get the label off the ground and assisted in the realization of Bastion's first release. In early 2011, ZVS returned to sole control of Bastion Recordings. We thank Zach G. for his help. WHAT IS BASTION ABOUT? Bastion Recordings is about music as more than entertainment. Accordingly, we reject all the trappings of the music "industry" that come with an entertainment-oriented outlook toward music. We realize that it is impossible to avoid all encounters with that world, and we believe in getting the word out about the music we support, but we feel that we can accomplish our goals with our integrity intact and without treating music as "product" or as filler. We believe in artists as creatively autonomous and see our role as providing a safe home for independent-minded musical endeavors that don't get a fair chance in the major or even indie scenes. We wish to play a part, however small, in making overlooked music available and ensuring that some really special creations don't just disappear into the ether. WHERE CAN I GET YOUR RELEASES? Currently, our only release (Red Sun's "Werewolves on Mars") is available from Interpunk (CD) and Bandcamp (digital). See Red Sun's discography/artist page on this site for links and details. For future releases, we plan to make them avaiable through online retailers for your convenience. We previously experimented with having a webstore, but with our limited resources and time we had trouble implementing one that calculated fair and accurate shipping and handled orders of varying sizes. Perhaps in the future, we will be able to add a good webstore to this site, and you will be able to buy all the Bastion releases you like right here. In the meantime, we hope to make the website an interesting and unique resource for information about our releases and artists. This is at the election of the artist. We recognize that some musicians embrace (or accept) the digital format and others wish to focus only on tangible media. You can find out what formats a particular release is available in by viewing the artist's discography page under "artists/releases." DO WE ACCEPT DEMOS/PROMO PACKAGES/ETC? Sure, but you should know ahead of time that we don't have a lot of money lying around and can't accept everything, even if we really like it. However, we can at least promise a constructive review. WHERE IS BAST001? Bastion catalogue no. 001 is "Years of Planning," a solo work by Zack Sunderman. It is out of print.
